After college dropoff

One week after college dropoff and this song played in Friday evening yoga class and after the 3rd Antara repetition, melted me into a pool.

Song: Tu Hain Toh | Mr. & Mrs. Mahi | Rajkummar Rao, Janhvi Kapoor | Hunny, Bunny, Sagar | Team Jaani

Sath tere na safar vo safar nahi lagta

Tu hai toh dil dhadakta hai

Tu hai toh saa’ns aati hai

Tu na toh ghar ghar nahi lagta

Tu hai to darr nahi lagta

Tu hai toh gham na aate hai

Tu hai toh muskurate hai

Ke tere bin so nahi sakte

Kisi ke ho nahi sakte

Again, highly recommended for parents of young kids. Everyone will have a fun time.

The run swag this year was a lovely white full-sleeve t-shirt and heavy Medal.

Pre-Bedtime Bored Jar

Week day evenings are so chaotic. There is this rush to cook, feed, eat and packup so we can go to bed as soon as possible. But because we parents are so busy with these main chores, week after week go away and we spend a small % of the day doing some quality stuff with the kids.

I truly like the idea of Bored Jar. Here is my tailored version, for those Weekday evenings. This will help me when my brain can't step away from the chores to think of some short activity with kids. These things are lying around neatly organised. All kids need is something interesting to get started and then they are off doing more by them-self.

Arsenal for Kids studytime

My arsenal for kids homework. It make kids homework time , a lot more fun - for Parents ! And this is focused on Pre-K, K and 1st grade kids.

Half the time, kids give ideas on how to use the same-old tool in different way. Nothing can beat our jaded brains than the freshly minted creativity of a kids.
And the other half-time, I rely on homeschool blogs. They have done so much hard work and shared their knowledge. Hats off to those home-schooling parents.

What better tools to learn new words than flash cards, magnetic letters or Scrabble letters and Marker pens.

Here I enclosed Read-Build-Write printouts in plastic.

Eventually practice with spelling tests.
Name-Place-animal-Things game - nostalgic and awesome tool for all round development of language. Older kids have to brain-storm through their data mine and achieve speed. But younger kids can hunt the right word on maps or books and write the entries. that will build their database.

Number grid - the most powerful tool of all. Can teach a variety of things - like count by 2,3,4,5,10; additions, subtractions. Because seriously, how many times can you write these things, over and over again ? And how will it reveal the stuff between the lines ?
By using it like a board games - that's how !
So we used:
  1. 2 players
  2. pair of dice (pink ones at that)
  3. printed number grid
  4. Barbie shoes for keys
And practice additions, subtractions & mystery numbers with pebbles, toy-cars and other small objects.

Pregnancy & Delivery

When I went through pregnancy and new motherhood , every single moment was a learning experience. I wanted to share and document those profound instances. I was sure I would write a book on it. And with passing time, I hoped to atleast blog some of them in a series of posts. Eventually they were limited to discussions, with others who were in the same boat and those were going to ride one soon. Before all my knowledge evaporates in the heat of daily fire, I need to log them in any manner, in any size post.

Every woman has a very different experience and new things can be learnt from each woman. There are so many things common, it makes sense to do what others did, rather than spend energy inventing the wheel. The best woman to start with is, your own mother. Talk to her about how pregnancy and delivery went for her. Genetics plays an unimaginable role. Your own experience could be a variation of it, because you are your own person and technology has totally changed in the last few decades. But it’s a great starting point to learn. If I were to share my learning's with you here it is.

Pregnancy and Delivery

Maternity clothes do need attention. Loose or non-constricting clothes do matter. In the country of saree & salwar suit, I wished they would categorize nightie as office professional wear. This was before I discovered Maxi. Not to forget comfy underwear, nursing bras and front opening nighties. Buy them in bigger size, because the privates are going to be bigger than usual for the 2 trimesters plus the baby-feeding months.

If you are considering new house, ensure hospital, grocery, laundry and elevator are nearby. If not, then know the easiest routes to those important places,

The wait in the last month is just endless. Do maintain your body flexibility. Go for walks when you can. Do checkout the permitted exercises. Ex: being on your fours (palms and knees) is good, as it takes the pressure off back. There are a lot more safe Yoga exercises.

I drank lukewarm water during the winter months, as I was down with cold and during the last month. I do not have any scientific evidence, but it relaxed my insides.

Swollen feet is a painful problem. Maybe it’s unavoidable in the last 2 months. It gets fine immediately after delivery. But it’s best to push it’s onset as late as possible. I went on overnight bus journey in my 5th month and my feet ballooned up. It made walking painful. Bones in my own feet felt like pins on my cushiony feet muscles. I used to rest my feet on 3-4 pillows while in bed; so the bloating could flow down. Or soak in in a bucket of hot water with salt.

Back pain is something we should strive to avoid. Eventually in pregnancy, back distress is going to come up. After delivery, take bed rest for the whole 2 months. Stay home with kid for 2 months. Sleep when she sleeps. Don’t do any extra work for the 2 months. After that anyway there is endless work. These 2 months of rest will let your back and body repair, and become stronger. It will also help avoid back-pain in older age. Such 2 months of bed-rest sounds like a luxury of ladies who can afford maternity leave or those who have help at home. Ladies who need to get back to work soon, those with older kids or someone who needs daycare will find it impossible to take this kind of downtime. It’s only a guideline to give your body some well-deserved rest for a stretch of time immediately after delivery. Body has been through a major change for 9 months and a major upheaval during delivery. Since everything looks the same from outside and everyday someone delivers a kid or because memory of our own experience has faded, it’s easy to under-estimate the whole thing. But it is not something to kid about. Blessed are the countries who have implemented ‘Right to Payment while on Maternity Leave’ policies. A mother gives birth not just for her own motivations. New life brings new hope for the entire society.

Topic of Epidural is way more complicated than to be tackled in a blog post. It’s best to discuss it with Doctor. My personal experience - I did not receive any epidural as my kids arrived before their due date. One thing I would recommend is HOT shower when contractions start mildly. I took HOT shower, changed to nightie and left for hospital. That hot shower helps in body relaxation.

My kids were born way before date. It was amazing time. I followed the “What to Expect when Expecting” book and was sure the delivery would be on the exact date. I refused to believe that what I felt were contractions, because the book did talk about false alarm. I refused to go hospital to avoid any embarrassment of being sent back. I stayed home till I actually started screaming loudly without any care. And then it was a rush to hospital. Hubby drove and he stopped the car every single time I strong contraction came along; because the road bumps were added discomfort for me.

With this surprise, I did not have a Hospital bag ready. Hubby had to go back and forth a lot to get my stuff - toothbrush, camera, few clothes for the time of stay. Hospitals do give a lot of stuff like diaper, thermometer, etc. So check with yours. Afterwards for home you will need diapers, sanitary napkins, breast-pads, nursing bras, etc.

Another preparation you need, is to stockup on the post-partum nutrition. Traditionally in India, a lot of energy balls (laddoos) are made to provide energy and aid digestion (which is pretty messed up in a new mother). My Mom made them and kept it going for 2 months. I did not note their recipes. My MIL made Jirvani and Meva ka laddoo. USA equivalent of it are the good quality energy bars, snacks, dry and fresh fruits. Its good to stockup on those. Immediately after delivery, you might get hungry at midnight too. This is apart from your regular meals. Every morning, my MIL gave me a glass of warm milk mixed with sugar, turmeric, cashew, raisins, almonds & coconut flakes. Key thing being items high on nutrition and energy.

Don’t worry about weight. After delivery, you keep losing weight for next 5-6 months. Actual weight gain will happen around 8-12 months. Persistent late nights, odd hours snacking and out-of-control emotions upset any decent control we have on our food and exercise. You have nothing to worry till 6-8 months after delivery. Just relax and enjoy your time with baby!

New Mother

In this chaos and elation of delivery, all undesirable thoughts get pushed away. We might refuse to believe anything bad exists in the universe or refuse to see it at all. This is the situation when we may write away cheques to relatives or friends looking for loan and regret later. This is the time we might choose not to take baby studio pictures and regret having missed the moment. In this moment of elation, we may give away our choice of name, middle name or last name, and later wish we did not. Sometimes this life event may get timed along with other life events like a job change, new house,  country movement, higher education or financial status change either-way. Life will have its other ups and downs.

In hindsight, all this may seem funny. But this range of event , combined together in this happy stage of life, could bump up the pressure, shoot up the stress level and really overwhelm both parents. And that means, not to be shy or frugal about taking help. Those who said "it takes a village.." were not kidding.

Here are some of my learning's, which I usually talk about in person. So here it goes:

IGNORE the pressure & guilt that comes with motherhood. Just focus on the baby & related responsibilities. Everything else can come back on track gradually, after baby is 2-3 years.

Pressure: like societal pressure of how mother should be, how to look, how the baby should look or be taken care of, etc etc. In movies & popular culture, they show all lovey-dovey mother & infants. It is not always like that. It is okay if you are not all gushing with love after delivery. And that is because your physical & chemical changes are way too much. Its okay for others in the family, to fawn over baby for that month or so, while you cant.

Guilt: that anything happens, its mothers fault. You do this,  mother is wrong. You do that, mother is wrong. Every tiny thing is scrutinized and judgement passed by every moving ant.

A sample of how I felt - here.

Basically relax and handle the job at hand. All this pressure & guilt are useless. Because there is never a right answer; just immense choices.

Next step, network with other young mothers. The more you all talk, the more tips you get on how to handle certain things. It lets you let off some steam. Its always helpful. Usual group dynamics will be there. You may not like some of the ladies. But it's always better than being by yourself. No matter who the lady (your circle, your distant relative, colleges, their wife, anyone), just talk, talk & talk :) We learn from others experiences, other learn from ours. Its not possible to invent solution every single time. When baby throws up, or doesn't drink milk from bottle or so many other situations. Talking with other young mothers gives you tips, which you can't think up, in the heat of situation. Esp when the infant is crying, my brain just shuts down. Only thing which helps me is what my mom or other mothers that I know, did in a similar situation.

Be one step ahead. Babies cry only if they hungry or sleepy or tired or need diaper change. If those things are taken care of in advance, then they cry less. Even now that my kids are 4-7, anytime they look cranky, I drop everything else and make them eat or sleep. :D

Then there will be times, when they cry for no reason. Esp when we are in hurry or in some embarrassing situation (like a shop or plane or restaurant). Our brain will freeze. But can’t help it. Just be patient. Its okay if they cry. Everybody around us know kids cry, even they would have gone through it.

About messy house, oh kids house & single/bachelor house are totally different. Its fine to have a messy house - that's how a kids house is supposed to be. Things are not going to be in their place. Take help when needed - cleaners, babysitter, anybody.

Setup playdates. Even young infants like to be among people, to see the blue sky. Isolation is very unhealthy. Be among people.

There is lot of online help. So many mommy-blogs where they share their experience. Babycenter site send weekly mail, which is a blessing. I registered for both of mine. And I still get these mails. It always has accurate info for the kid, at that age in that week. More specialized online training must also help. There are so much overwhelming feelings, there are so many physical, chemical and schedule changes after baby, that unpredictable things can happen.

After few months, even if you don't have free time, indulge in a hobby. Online activity does not count. Write a diary, or train for some competition (photography, art, music, flash-mob dance, race, anything). Join any association which has some activities. Bring your old forgotten hobbies back.

Be ready to take a million photos of the toothless mouth smiling & laughing. It is the cutest, most beautiful thing in the whole world ! :)

Pregnancy, delivery and new motherhood are a building block of every society and also the most taken for granted ones. Those going through it will have their minds blown (and other parts too). Eventually the pain and experience dims. And it enriches us along the the way.

TC Fieldhouse Kids Fun Run - 2015

On 7 Feb Saturday morning we went to UofM Fieldhouse for TCKids Fun Run. This was a very formal experience to introduce Kids into the world of Racing. For that matter, it’s was a first exposure for me too as I was new to racing even though an adult. The Fieldhouse is a huge indoor stadium with looped tracks. Location and parking directions on the TC website were right on the mark.

We waited in the indoor stadium for the races to start at 9am. They were planned by each grade, one after the other, beginning with Pre-K for ½ mile or 4 loops. Directions for the kids & parents for waiting, guided stretching class and finally running were impeccable. There were 100s of us, yet the fieldhouse was spacious without cluttering us.

The mascots were a hit with kids in each race. It was a diverse crowd of different ages, nationality origin and different capabilities. Yet each kids knew they were doing something important and none threw a tantrum.

It was great to watch all parents cheers kids.

I would strongly recommend such experience to all young parents.

Along the way ...

TRAVAILS OF CAUTIOUS DRIVING:

A5 backseat commentary for my solo driving in US this year:
* Day 1: Excited with full clapping - "Well done Mom ! You did it !"
* Day 6: Smart aleck with full firang twang, "You sure know to drive Mama !"
* Day 21: Full exasperated, "Its taking too much time today ...."

Seriously they should come up with Dora/Diego/Mickey etc with songs saying "Eat your food ... eat your food...". Kids respond to everything on these shows. Atleast they will start eating too !!!!!

I spend days looking for those tiny little shoes. And then they get lost in minutes. Hufp !

Filmy Biwi ka side Effect

Eureka - S4:E14
This sequence excited me so much I had to make this collage.
And that episode, where all stuff start flying upwards. That was in lieu of the title sequence, we have been watching for so many seasons already.

Minnesota icebox - (in a sing-song Advertisement voice)
Cold khana garam karna ho ? - 30 sec in microwave.
Hot khana thanda karna ho ? - 30 sec in balcony.

Warmup Cold food ? - 30 sec in microwave.
Cooldown Hot food ? - 30 sec in balcony.

First Snow of the Season !
Yeah ! Finally its here !
Regret not taking the before photo.
But it just went from 0 to 1 and then 2 in 1 hour !

Monk Rocket Boy

My very first White Christmas. My Daughter's very first White Christmas too. And my Son's very first Christmas ever ! Yes, we welcomed him 2 weeks back and I became Mom, for the second time. In the middle of this crowded household, Hubby is doing just fine.

Last month and half has been momentous totally. Among other things, I travelled half-way across the world, from Bangalore to Minnesota. With my toddler and 30-week belly. (My travel bug is not over yet. Have another move scheduled next month) Lesson learnt in this air-travel - Be hands-free if you are with a toddler. Not even a purse- forget about cabin luggage. Because toddlers can fall asleep - yes. And strollers or trolleys are not allowed everywere in the airport. So.

What is more painful than the labour and delivery pain ? It's deciding your kids name. Oh yes, it is. Last time we spent 3 months on finalising a name. This time we had only 3 days. And I saw "Rocket Singh - Salesman of the year" same week, but after delivery, else the job would have been easier. Yes, Rocket Singh is my current favourite movie. Its definitely going tomake it to my DVD collection. Loved each character, every partner, his boss, their quirks. Dialoges were all picked up from normal real life ofcourse. Not surprising since they have such a research team in place. But when put to such rocking spy-movie-type background music, it turned out exicting. But I liked it mostly because the first half reminded me of mine and my Hubby's first jobs. But the second-half reminded me why I love my job.

On a side note, Monk got over. Sigh. But they ended this wonderful series perfectly well. For Leland, Randy, Natalie and Sharona. And most importantly for Monk.

Baby Product Brand Endorsements

  • Wipro Baby Diapers: I have to say that they are the best !
  • Second option would be Huggies. And last choice will be Pampers. Wipro Baby Diapers are really cloth feel. They don't get wet & humid & stuffy, like others do.
  • Huggies Nappy Pads: Good for nap-time use for babies below 7-8 months. Or those who have not started to violently wither or turn around or move around the bed while sleeping. :) Johnsons Nappy Pads are not of that good quality. Price is same, but these are smaller.
  • Nestum Rice: Since Baby A was not taking cow milk very well, we started with Nestum instead of Cerelac. It does not have any milk powder in it.
  • Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder
  • Eyetex Kajal

Apart from these, no other brand endorsements. But there is a whole list of Baby products that are useful. Maybe next time.

    Open world, open minds

Govt staffers can take up to 3 yrs' child care leave

This is one rule that could turn women in India Inc green with envy. The Centre has not only increased maternity leave for its employees to six months but has also cleared paid leave for two years to take care of children.
Excellent ! Marvelous ! Stupendous ! This calls for celebration !

If this (or any) society wants to progress or even stay alive, it has to consider the contribution of women - both at work and also at home. And it should tailor the work processes to accomodate child birth, adoption & child care.

3 months maternity leave was really a joke. 6 months is adequate. And child care leaves are absolute necessity. Taking a clean job break is not possible anymore. We need to continue to use our education and worldly skills, while we raise our kids. Part-time, flexible hours, free-lancing, work from home - the world is opening up. Now our decision makers need to open their minds.

Fingers-crossed for these benefits to seep in from government to corporate as well as unorganised job sectors too.

    The One in Which

... Saif says in a TOI interview:
Would I watch "Thoda Pyaar..."? No I prefer American films. I don't see that many Hindi films.
This reminds me of the FRIENDS episode "The One With Joey's Interview", where Joey is tensed about his interview with Soap Opera Digest magazine and enlists his friend's help to control what he says. But ofcourse, as parting shot he does blurt out something true:
Interviewer: Other than Days of Our Lives, what is your favorite soap opera?
Joey: Oh, I don't watch soap operas. Excuse me, I have a life, you know?
Interviewer (stunned): Thank you. The readers at Soap Opera Digest will be happy to learn that.

And to think we unsuspecting public gratefully partake any bs the media (Films & TV) guys serve us. They don't put much thought or put responsibility in what they create. But we spend hours thinking, analysing & absorbing the thoughts & concepts they publicise. We grow on those lines, change our thinkings, even make them our culture. But the truth is, most of all Film & TV output is crap !

No wonder parents across cultures, have a tight hold on every single thing their children are exposed to. Or indulge in manipulative brainwashing their kids, so they growup well. Ofcourse children will feel 'icky' about it and pen out angst pieces in children/teen magazines or blogs. But ultimately it works out fine.

Frankly, it much better to let kids loose in playground, let them get into brawls with cousins & neighbour kids, let them participate in dogmatic orthodox religious family customs, be told all even juicy extended family history, rather then be babysat by TV. Living in the real world, whether good or bad, will only strengten their instincts and help them think & make decisions. As compared to watching TV or Films, where we simply offload conclusions derived by someone else, for their benefit.

    Lalita Pawar

i found out that my one eye is closed when i wake up unexpected in the morning or middle of the night.

    its 1:30 am.
    right now am feeling sleepy.
    almost falling.
but my one eye is open.
& the other is shutting by itself !

to give some background, when we were young, some of the late nights my brother & me would create some ruckus - watch TV loud & late or fight or something, my mom would stumble to our room, barely awake, with one eye shut tight, to dhamkaofy us to sleep off. so we would tease her as "Lalita Pawar" ! i would give more background, but i can barely type.

anyway in recent times, i have taken over the Lalita Pawar tag. but atleast i have a scientific explanation about the cause !

    Secure Gift

Now-a-days all personal interaction, happens on mobile phones, webcam video-conf & voice chat, IM and ofcourse Emails. Postal service and courier is only for official documents & bills. Really, all romantic notions of letters have been thoroughly & definitely squashed.

But once in a while, courier brings along a surprise or much-awaited gift. A usually very quiet, sober collegue of mine & who did not entertain chit-chat, she visibly melted when I got a courier parcel. My husband had sent me his photos & 2 novels from Toronto. "Oh so romantic to get parcel gift :)".

Anyway those were the days. I always give my office address, as it's easier to collect courier. Mainly because it is not returned due to the no-response-on-door reason, like at home. Here an office department collects all couriers, email us to collect our consignment from the Dispatch department. (Or that it would be dumped in 3 days). Anyway so, we go there whenever free, collect the thing, be exicted and then life goes on.

Barbie against AishwaryaBut now with the terror shadow everywhere, there is added exictment. I got a call from Dispatch to come over. Once there, they sent me off to entrance gate to collect my parcel. This was new ! Once there, after all signing & stuff, I got the packet. Now it was the company security's turn to check it up. And the thing beeped a lot ! So he gingerly opened it. We peeped in. Baby clothes & 2 long boxes. Which beeped. The dolls beeped, and they being Dolls, were definitely suspectable. But can anything fit inside Barbie dolls ? I don't think so. Few seconds of quiet decision making & I was off with my baby's gift from Aunty M :)

I am not only happy for this added zing, but also thankful. The security people ,inspite of being in such stressful pressure, take their job so seriously. And hey, Thanks M !

    Life changing role

As besotted as I am, I think I need to wake up and get out of the sentimental pool. Because I have the higher authorities following up on me. That I am not teaching her anything. Teach her to eat, to walk, to talk. That they have to do everything.

The first thing I faced after the post-partum honeymoon period was over, is the number of accusations I need to face. Nobody dared say anything to me when I was the quickfire rebellous youth. Now that I was besotted & vulnerable, everyone had something to say to me. "You feed her unboiled water, that's why she caught cold." "You didnt warm the food enough, so she is not eating." "Oh this is so hot, how can she eat?" "Look you gave cold food, how can she eat?" Someone might think I was not the mother !

So now after the First Birthday Party, I have decided to take on the role of teacher too. That I will sit down & play with her. And teach her to sing, and play and what not. Sometimes I feel that's a Teacher's job. And that is their strength. No one can teach rhymes and tell stories like they can. Why should I even try ? Let me provide for other things.

Which brings me to Housework. If there is one thing I hate about housework, it's that it just never ends ! Its totally 24x7. There is always something left to do. And once it is over, there it is again. No matter how quickly you finish or delegate it. Absolutely neverending loop. Earlier I thought SAHM is the best option. I would get to spend a LOT of my time with Baby. What I did not know was that, Housework would suck out all of my time. And it's no different, when I went back to work.

So ultimately this area also needs discipline & mental power - to not be sucked into a guilt-trap about untidy house or food-not-on-time, etc. And just spend time with my kid.

    Happy Birthday Baby

    Aankhon mein teri
Ajab si, ajab si, adaayein hain
    Ho…
    ankhon mein teri
ajab si, ajab si, adaayein hain
Dil ko bana dein jo patang
Saansein ye teri vo hawaayein hain

    Aayi aisi raat hai jo
    Bohat khush-naseeb hai
    Chaahe jisse door se duniya
    Vo mere kareeb hai
    Kitna kuch kehna hai
Fir bhi hai dil mein sawaal kaheen
Sapnon mein jo roz kaha hai
wo phir se kahun Ya nahee

    Aankhon mein teri
Ajab si, ajab si, adaayein hain
    Ho…
    ankhon mein teri
ajab si, ajab si, adaayein hain
Dil ko bana dein jo patang
Saansein ye teri vo hawaayein hain

    Tere saath saath aisa
    Koi noor aaya hai
    Chaand teri raushni ka
    Halka sa ik sayaa hai
Teri nazron ne dil ka kiya jo hasharr
    Asarr ye hua
Ab inmein hi doobke ho jaaun paar
    Yehi hai dua

    Aankhon mein teri
Ajab si, ajab si, adaayein hain
    Ho…
    ankhon mein teri
ajab si, ajab si, adaayein hain
Dil ko bana dein jo patang
Saansein ye teri vo hawaayein hain

I am very good with all babies.
I can endlessly talk with most kids and they with me.
But with my Baby A, I am totally awestruck & tongue-tied.
Even though it's exactly One Year this day.

I am very good with all the baby-care work too.
Providing, cleaning, arranging, sleep, food, clothing, books, toys, hygiene, everything.
But one look at her face, one gurgle, one coo, one toothless gummy grin - and that's it, I become one lovestruck, speechless bumpkin.
This OSO song is absolutely is the right one - about her, about me.

    My Mom's Kitchen Shelf

My Mom's Kitchen Shelf. And my entry to the CLICK May 2008 event.

    CLICK Beans n Lentils

This month's theme is "Beans 'n Lentils". I have always been a fan of Lentils or Daals. And only now do I realize, that they are a manna. Very nutritious and tasty and quick to cook, especially for Baby food.

Let me share my recipe for Baby food. This has variety and considering that it has to be made day after day, for 3-4 meals a day, very convenient, as it does not require much thought. Rice, Daal & Veggies mentioned below can be used in different permutation-combination.

    Ingredients:

  • Rice: White, brown
  • Lentil/Daal: Moong, Toor/Arhar, Masoor
  • Veggie: Carrot, Potato, Cabbage, Spinach/Palak, Cauliflower, Sweet potato
  • Salt & Turmeric
  • Broken wheat: Optional

    1) Wash equal portion of Rice, Daal & Wheat in pressure cooker.
    2) Add double quantity water.
    3) Add a pinch of salt & turmeric powder.
    4) Add chopped veggies
    5) Pressure cook to very soft.
    6) Puree a meal portion.
    7) Store the remaining in Fridge. Puree fresh when required.

It's a form of kichdi. But once pureed, it gets a look of Pudding or fruit-less Custard. This pureed food is the best till Baby is toothless.

What I Did This Summer ?

Summer vacations. We are half-way through. Schools might start in a few weeks. I don't remember much details about my vacations, except it was fun, just games outdoors with my brother and friends or visits to Grandpa home in Udupi. That totally changed with college and after starting work, I think I completely forgot what it means !

It's only now with the challenge of entertaining my cousins & nephew, who are here for the vacations, that I am slowly going back in time. Initially it's just TV and their usual outdoor play, and some tinkering with mobile phones. With nearly every adult having his/her own mobile, each different make & model along with their Games, that's a lot of keeping-them-busy. But there is a limit to how much TV one can watch. It's a wakeupcall only when one of them gets a headache. So now I was the organiser, rather than the vacationee.

Kids are notorious for getting bored every minute. So this is a list of things for them to do which requires minimum adult supervison.

      Gadgets:
    1. Photography: Thanks to Digital cameras, they can take unlimited photos, make mistakes, learn, experiment. Also add mobile camera phones.
    2. Computer games, DishTV, TataSky games
    3. Other video games

Games: No matter how modern times, traditional games are always at your rescue.
    4. Scrabble
    5. Chess
    6. Cricket
    7. Swimming or just thrashing around in water tank
    8. Byheart a book on Capital & Flags of all Countries. It's fun to toss around a Capital quiz at dinner
    9. Word: Boggle, Name-Place-Animal-Thing

      Projects:
    10. Paper Puppets: Draw out characters (like Joker) or objects (tree, ball). Stick it to another paper, with a broom stick in between. Cut around the outline. That's one puppet. And then play out a story from behind the sofa. Yesterday, we taped one such play, and then spent rest of the day, laughing at every rerun!
    11. Socks or cloth puppets, if you have more time to guide.
    12. Leaf Project: Collect leaves of different plant. stick them in project book. Label them.
    13. Book reading: Out loud
    14. Scrap book: Give each child a diary. Let them cutout & paste any picture that catches their fancy. From old magazines & newspapers. Cars, cricketers, mobile phones, nature, animals, etc. Watch this scrap book grow with each vacation.
    15. Drawing book: 10 drawings per vacation. Inspiration is all around us. Household objects, plants, animals, etc.

      Outings: Picnics at
    16. Lalbagh
    17. Cubbon Park
    18. Museum tour: Art & Science Museum at Kasturba Gandhi Road; Innovatice Film City has numerous ones (Dino, Fossil, Wax, Ripleys Believe it ot not)
    19. Big Banyan Tree

      Finally:
    20. And then signoff the vacation with an Essay on, "What I did this Summer !"

    In Love

As on July 12th, I crossed a major milestone in my life. I became a Mom ! To my lovely Daughter !

To sum it up - Absolutely unbelievable ! I am still reeling in disbelief. Hubby is equally affected. Even while going through the mundane routine, we still manage to float in a dreammy world. Her face, her smile, every little twitch of eyebrow, her eyes, everything leaves us speechless.
