My HGTV

I am at that age in life, where I can say I am a house-owner. It makes me feel all grown-up and not 20 anymore. I know the loan is still on. But I have enough experience, to feel like I have to share it. To be able to say all the previous sentences with confidence, I heavily relied on 3 members of my family. I actually hitch-hiked on their back, all these years.

Everything we learnt in the process, we share it with others. We pushed many to buy their own. And then there are some leftovers, which I feel I can pen down. It doesn't sound impressive while telling any of the acquaintances. But can be written without embarrassment. Some of it is wishlist, because no construction company or side industry supports it, even if it is common sense. The aim is only to increase productivity and efficiency by reducing the back-breaking effort that is maintaining a clean and neat home. Some of these are for built houses and some for apartment flats.

My pet peeve is a curtain rod, where the curtain gets stuck. Nope. I want things where one swipe and the curtain are shut. Swipe again and they are open. No strings or pulls to get entangled in. Steel rings are a blessing. This I learnt after living a few years with those nice showy curtain with stitched-in cloth ring. You just string it through curtain rod. And leave it as is. You got to stretch your body, every time for long time, to move the curtain in any direction. The one in this picture would torture me - and those living with me.

Crates for stuff storage - buy them in bulk, in same design. All clutter that escapes and cause eye-sores and break your back while putting them away, can be locked away neatly. Stuff like socks, exercise clothes, winter storage, swim supplies, drawing supplies, office supplies and more.

Always buy a towel holder with a large distance between the wall and the rod. And always fix them on a wall with tiles or other washable surface. With larger gap, its easier to hang or remove the towel.
And with a washable wall, you can rest easy no matter how wet or dirty the towel is. A painted wall will get stained and will stare at you, till the next repainting job. Which is practically ... I don't know when.

There should be a dedicated space for Folding & ironing table in Laundry room and  cupboard storage space for laundry bins. Some tips on Buzzfeed article "31 Ingenious Ways To Make Doing Laundry Easier".

First time we setup a home, we were very aspirational and went overboard with mirrors on every cupboard in the house, glass shelves and glass side tables and many other glass-works. Most of our elders advised against it; but without explaining the reason. Things were in motion, so we couldn't change design now, without cost. And this was before kids, so we had no way to guess why having so much Glass in the house was dangerous. Now we know - it's DANGERous. It breaks, causes a mess for cleanup and of course dangerous.

Rains are so romantic in movies. That's because there is a background song or music playing. When you have to endure the unceasing downpour all night, sleep is the first thing to run away. Folks living in monsoon places would know. Add to that, the water gushing down the pipes and just pouring away few stories below. Those on ground-floor wont get any sleep. Solution is simple. Make the pipes on terrace go all the way to the floor. House building budget won't stretch too much for these pipes. Plus the floor (whether clay or cement) would be saved of being dug-up by that continuous pour over a period of time.

Rain water harvesting is another important thing to incorporate while building a house. Its pretty simple and now-a-days many vendor do this at a nominal fee. No sweat, no inventing the solution. They will tailor it to your site. This way your garden, outdoor cleanups and other activities water source can be rainwater.

Same goes for solar lights. Today many vendors do this. It's a saviour, in places with many power cuts. the difference in quality of life is immediate.

Along the way ...

TRAVAILS OF CAUTIOUS DRIVING:

A5 backseat commentary for my solo driving in US this year:
* Day 1: Excited with full clapping - "Well done Mom ! You did it !"
* Day 6: Smart aleck with full firang twang, "You sure know to drive Mama !"
* Day 21: Full exasperated, "Its taking too much time today ...."

Seriously they should come up with Dora/Diego/Mickey etc with songs saying "Eat your food ... eat your food...". Kids respond to everything on these shows. Atleast they will start eating too !!!!!

I spend days looking for those tiny little shoes. And then they get lost in minutes. Hufp !

Various Roopa's of Dr Rajkumar

Whether Mythology, Historic, Bond, Romantic Hero or Brother or more, there is only one - Dr Rajkumar !

And ah that lovely voice. Best thing to spark up a Saturday morning is Rajkumar playlist.

Every word sounds more beautiful when he utters it.
And anytime he says "Amma", it's goose-bump inducing.

Every time his song plays, while I am driving, I am instantly transported to Bangalore.

Letter to my Art Class Instructors

4-April-2012

Hi Brad & Stephanie,

I was very excited to join this class, as it was to be my very first classroom learning for painting. And the 6 weeks have truly been an amazing learning experience for me.

I have always liked the visual aspect of art, feelings that it generates in us when we see a painting or a sculpture. But here I learnt that our feelings can also flow down to paper. Thanks for bringing all these paintings, out of us.

All of Brad’s instructions - to use the complete canvas, be bold, take risks, try left-hand, mixing colors, technical details of brush lengths, usages & strokes and fresh new thinking for inspiration - really made such a difference, in the outcome of each of the pieces.

Packets for each class were great capsules, exposing us to a whole new world of each style. I can only imagine how carefully they had been collected for us.

Course outline and instructions helped us work within limitations as well as free our minds and explore new things.

I always imagined that every object in a picture should be separated by black outlines only, very similar to illustrations. Here I learnt that any color can bring out the distinctness I was looking for. And out of some habit, I always left out thin strips of blanks around the canvas, much like a border on a frame. I never imagined that a painting can spread out of the canvas too !

My next steps will be to instill some discipline in myself, and bring out clarity, smoothness and sharpness, in the details of my subjects. Something to do in my own time and with focus.

So far my favorites have been landscapes and photo-realistic portraits. But now I am all gung-ho to try the art of this age – pop-art, mixed media (collages of print and color) and abstracts in general. I discovered James Rosenquist yesterday and am excited to explore his works.

I am look forward to more such initiatives. Either focusing on specific genres like landscapes, abstracts or portraits. Or maybe an Art club for more folks to get together & paint.

And thank you Steph for organizing these things. It just makes me so proud of our home, which CEDARS is, for me and family. J

Regards,
Prithi

 Excellent Kahaani

Cool Bidya Bagchi and really really sweet Rana

This unique poster lead to a really interesting movie.

And one-side effect is - it makes me hum a lot of 80s RD Burman songs. A lot of them played in background, in Bengali.

Memorial Weekend 2009 - NYC, Washington, Baltimore & Niagara Falls

But before I leave, I thought I gotta post what we did last May. I know, I have stretched the "being busy" excuse for nearly a year. And I missed that deadline too.

For last years Memorial Day weekend, we went on a whirlwind 4 city tour on the east side. Each of them, was memorable - for reasons other than the city sights. It was our very own private 'Amazing Race'.

Beginning with New York,

Good to see the busy city, which is so popular in Hollywood movies and now in Hindi too. Its obviously for youth. Coz the subway and almost all apartments are stroller-unfriendly.

And our last hour in NY was memorable too. Coz it stretched from morning to evening. We all got ready, checkedout and we in a rented taxi to bus-stop for Washington. Everyone got off, pulled all the bags out. I got out with my toddler. Hubby paid the driver and off he went, coz no place to park. He could not hear my silent scream, "Hey, my bag is still in there. And so are the passports !"

The. Biggest. Nightmare. Of. Foreign. Travel. Lost Passports !

Anyway, a hundred calls to everyone possible later, someone contacted the agency. Who waited for the driver to come back. Then sent him to our place. And we got back our bag in the afternoon. The. Relief. Biggest one.

And so we caught the evening bus to Washington. Reached all tired & exhausted - without doing much actually.

Then, Washington:

Now this is one city - I can say for sure - I saw it all, without stepping my foot on it ! (Except the hotel, of-course) Yes, we were there for 1.5 days and saw the city without stepping out of the van. We lost 1 day to the above mentioned adventure.

We saw the Bikers parade too. But it was too dark & swift moving, to capture in any snap. The one below, btw, is the White House.

And, Baltimore:

Which btw was the most expensive, for our budget. Everything was high price - food, parking. But the city sights & Aquarium - awesome !

And finally Niagara Falls.

I saw the Canada side of Niagara in 2006. And, saw the USA side in 2009. And it's equally amazing ! The 8 hours drive to & then 8 hours back, was totally worth our 4 hour stay.

Our excitement to see the falls, was heightened by the anxiety, that our toddler might have dropped hubby's gold chain, in Subway, where we had stopped last - and we could not go, search in the van, coz we had started the tour already. Anyway, once out of the tour, we found it alright, on the van floor, below the carpet. How it slide in there ? Well every kid is a Houdini. No really, ask any Mom.

And then ? The usual air-travel back home. Travel with kids. Not just kids, but really, actually, tired Toddlers. That too with a jam-packed itinerary. Pretty much touch & go sight-seeing. Ya, that's some thrill. It beats bungee-jumping anyday.

Air-travel with kids 101

Tips on Air-travel with really young kids.

- If stroller does not fit in your perimeter, chose a baby-carrier for infants.

- Have light cabin bag or none at all. Ok none is not possible, what with diapers, bottles, formula & change of clothes. Whatever cabin bag, have one with WHEELS. Oh yes ! that and never overpack.

- Dont forget to request for Bassinet with airlines at the time of checkin, incase you are travelling with infants.

- Before boarding at the gate, request for Wheelchair assistace at the destination. This will speed things up for you. You can travel in Airport-caddy. And in India you can bypass long queues at Customs/Immigration desks.

I don't know why airports have this thing to collect boarding passes each time at every hop airport, for infants. This is as opposed to getting boarding passes for all hops at the first airport itself. So we need to conserve energy and get things done as fast as possible.

Wiscousin Dells

Wiscousin Dells. 2 hours drive from Minneapolis.

Rides were fun. The drive was fun too.

Got to see actual cows ! And clothes hanging on line to dry in open !
Ya, both a novelty for apartment dwellers !

We went on a gloomy, cloudy, not-yet-springtime weekend. So most outdoors were closed. But water-rides were fun.

Anyway there are way too many rides for only a weekend. I have seen more on TLC, than live on a weekend.
